Alice was educated in the Ellington Township schools, and did additiona l work at the Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls. She taught sch ool for more than twenty years at Ellington and Madison Township schools . When she was teaching at a school close enough to home, she went to sc hool by horseback.

Following the death of her father, Alice moved from the family farm int o town with her mother, Elvira. They made their home together for twenty -six years, until Elvira's death. After the death of her mother, Alice l ived in Forest City, Iowa.
