George Lewes was a planter, and resided in the East Parish in Barnstabl e. He was not so well educated as others of the family, and had not the active business capacity of his brothers James or Thomas; yet he was hon est and industrious, a good neighbor, and a worthy member of the church.
His house stood on the south side of the highway, on the lot of land re cently owned by Mr Daniel Cobb, deceased. Hi houselot containing five ac res, with a barn standing thereon , he bought September 10, 1656, of Bar nard and Joshus Lumbard. It was bounded north by the highway, east by th e great lot of Thomas Lumbard, south and west by the land of Barnard Lum bard. This was originally the land of Joshua Lumbard and the lot contain ed six acres, one acre in the sale to Lewes (where Nathaniel Gorham's ba rn now stands being reserved. His farm was on the north side of the road. In 1654 he had sixteen acr es bounded west by the road to the new common field, north partly by the land of Goodman Wells, and the Indian reservation, and easterly by the land of Thomas Huckins, at the "Horse Prison" so called. -As written by Amos Otis
